Have we taken "Slug Bug" too far??

Everyone knows the classic "slug bug" game... You see a Volkswagen Beetle, yell out the color of the car and punch the person next to you. VW's recent ad compaign added a new twist to this well known game. The commercials show people not just identifying the Beetles, but all Volkswagens.
Please visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punch_buggybuggy for more information on the game.

With this new change in the game's rules, we have started to play once again, changing a few of the rules. I think we have started to take this game a little to seriously....
We first decided that we don't like to hit or punch, so we poke eachother instead. The game started off pretty simple but soon it became an all out competition. Derek decided that he did not like losing all the time (he typically drives and thinks paying attention to the road is more important.) While out on errands, Derek decided to go to a Volkswagen dealership and took pictures that he sent to me on my phone. This sneaky move was the ultimate "slug bug."

I refused to be defeated this way. Derek had officially started war. I happen to think that driving to a dealership is cheating, but very funny. So while I was running errands one day, I kept my eyes open and snapped shots of every Beetle I saw then emailed them to Derek. I concentrated only on the Beetles because we had decided that they were worth more.

So? Have we taken it too far? After much debate about our current rules, we made some modifications. If Derek is driving and spots a VW in the rear view mirror, he must state "you are beautiful" before he points out the car, giving me a chance to to turn around. If I spot a VW on the opposite side of the road while Derek is driving, I must state "thank you for driving" before pointing it out, giving Derek a chance to look over.

We do not keep a running score so we will never have a winner or loser, but it sure makes car rides a bit more interesting!

How to Honeymoon in Colorado like you are native

Derek and I were done planning, anything. So for our honeymoon, we packed up the car and our dogs with no real destination or plan in mind. It was by far the best decision we made! There was no stress about making flights or renting cars, and we didn't have to keep an agenda.

Saturday August 14, 2010:

We started our trip from home in Broomfield and drove west on I-70 to Heritage Square. Like a couple of kids, we rode the alpine slide and had hot dogs for lunch. Both of us remember the slide being a lot more thrilling, but it was still
fun! ://www.heritagesquare.info/

From Heritage Square, we continued west on I-70 and stopped in Silverthorne for the Outlet Mall. Derek hit up the Nike store for some new socks and I wandered through Coach trying to convince myself not to buy another purse. We kept the dogs with us as we walked the mall. People loved them! I was surprised that they were being so well behaved. We stopped for some ice cream and a caramel apple then decided to go to the Visitor Center to find all the touristy stuff to do. They gave us a great list for pet friendly hotels and Derek came across a flyer for paragliding in Glenwood Springs, so we started to head that direction.

On our way to Glenwood, we stopped in Vail to have dinner with Matt and make a quick stop in No Name. Yes, Colorado has a city named "No Name." I-70 takes you through Glenwood Canyon while on your way to Glenwood Springs. The view was breathtaking. As Colorado Natives, we tend to be destination bound, never stopping to take a look around. What a beautiful state we live in!

Once we arrived in Glenwood Springs (about a three hour drive from Denver), we checked into the Ramada Inn just around the corner from The Hot Springs Pool. The all natural Hot Springs Pool has a water flow of 3,500,000 gallons a day! The main pool is kept at 90 degrees Fahrenheit and the therapy pool is kept at 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The water contains 15 different minerals that do wonders for your body. We ended our evening with a nice swim at the hot springs and went back to the hotel feeling wonderfully relaxed.

Sunday August 15, 2010:

Derek and I decided to hike Hanging Lake. While driving to the trail we discovered that the exit was closed going both directions on the highway. We later discovered that the trail had been closed for the summer for construction. Luckily, we stumbled upon Grizzly Creek Trail. We leashed the dogs, grabbed some water and our cameras and decided to give it a whirl.
The hike was gorgeous! The trail ran right through Glenwood Canyon and was smothered with gorgeous waterfalls. The trail makes for a relatively easy hike. We hiked about two hours in for a four hour round trip. We weren't sure Maggie's short, little legs would make it, but she was quite the trooper! We were hesitant to take the girls off their leashes but finally just went for it. They behaved extremely well, staying just a little bit ahead of us and stopping every once in a while to look back and check on us.

By the end of the hike, we were all pretty hot and tired. Maggie and Miley cooled off by laying in the Creek.

After the hike, we went back to the hotel and napped then took advantage of the hot springs pool again.

Monday August 16, 2010:

We had planned on paragliding in Glenwood Springs but the weather was not ideal, so we went to Aspen instead (about an hour from Glenwood Springs, East on CO-82.) We walked around the shops downtown, grabbed some lunch at Boogies, then decided to take the Gondola up the mountain.

Dogs are permitted on the Gondola as long as they are leashed. That doesn't mean that they will like it. I thought Maggie was going to have a heart attack but Miley didn't seem phased at all. Once we reached the top, the girls played with a couple of adorable kids and we took them to a small field to run around. The view from the top of the peak was something else! It was almost as if we were floating in the clouds. We both really enjoyed taking it all in. The trip down the Gondola was not fun at all. We got on just in time for a storm to hit. The winds really picked up causing the Gondolas to swing. They had to stop us until the winds died down. So we were stuck on the gondola, not going anywhere, and swinging in high winds. I may have freaked out- just a little. We were finally brought in just as the hail started. What a trip.

From Aspen, we traveled to Marble (one hour from Aspen and 45 minutes from Glenwood Springs.) Marble only has a population of about 125 and is home to the Yule Marble Quarry and the Crystal Mill. The marble quarry is of exceptional quality and the Crystal Mill is the most photographed site in Colorado. Although we did not get a chance to see the quarry or the mill, we did meet some interesting people, saw some amazing sculptures, and brought some marble home.

After Marble we headed back to Glenwood Springs, this time checking into the Silver Spruce Motel. Once again we ended the day at the Hot Springs Pool.

Tuesday August 17, 2010:

Paragliding. We packed up our stuff, ate some breakfast and headed to the high school football field to meet our instructors. We arrived just in time to see the group in front of us land. I must admit I was a little nervous about it, but Derek was totally excited about and that made me feel better. We hopped into the truck and headed up to the launching site. In no time, both Derek and I were floating through the air above Glenwood Springs. It wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be. In fact, it was gorgeous, relaxing, and exhilarating all at the same time. Derek was able to catch the whole flight on film so I will share it soon.

While we were with the paragliding instructors, we were informed that Hanging Lake had just opened. So we made it our next stop. Dogs are not permitted on the trail so we had to leave the girls in the car, but we did manage to get a spot
in the shade. On our walk up to the trail, Channel 4 news was doing a story. Derek spoke up and managed to get us interviewed. We we shown on the 6:00 news that night. Our paragliding instructors made it into the story as well.

As we started the hike, I quickly realized why no dogs were allowed. The trail is pretty narrow and very steep in some parts. Although the hike was difficult, what we came to at the end made it all worth it.

After viewing Hanging lake from the bottom, we hike up another trail to see spouting rock...
Once we finished the hike down, we grabbed the dogs and headed to Winter Park (East on I-70 the West on US-40.) The drive east on I-70 was gorgeous. Once we got into Winter Park, we had realized that we had just been there for one of Derek's gigs so we went ahead and drove one more hour to Grand Lake. (West on US-40 then East on US-34.)We arrived pretty late so we found a cute little dog friendly hotel on the edge of town and called it a night.

Wednesday18, 2010:

Waking up in Grand Lake was great. We packed up and walked across the street for breakfast. We then walked the girls along the lake and found a place to rent a boat. We rented the boat for $40 an hour. IT WAS A BLAST!! They even let us take the dogs on board with us. Miley loved it. I think Maggie would have been happier sitting in the car.

After Grand Lake, we decided to make Estes Park our last stop on our way home, this way we wouldn't take I-70 back home, but instead a different route. Fortunaltley this different route ended up being Rocky National Park. We took US-34 East which turned into Trail Ridge Road, the highest through road in the nation-12,183 feet above sea level. Both Derek and I don't ever remember being in Rocky National Park so it was way past due and well worth it!

We had an absolutely amazing honeymoon. I couldn't have asked for anything more. I'm glad we took this trip around our own beautiful state. I definatly appreciate where we live more now! Not to self: Don't leave dog treats in the car with the dogs. Although it makes for two very happy dogs, it makes quite a mess.
